This is actual video that I happened to shoot one day of these "cute kids" on stage who could REALLY PLAY!

WHO KNEW?!!? ...Who knew that years later, these kids would grow up and become the Super Talented Grammy Award-Winning Band of Contemporary Acoustic Music "Nickel Creek"?

Location: Temecula, California
Event: Temecula Valley Arts Festival, 1991.
Video by: Wayne French

Guitar: Chris Thile
Fiddle: Sara Watkins
Mandolin: Sean Watkins
Acoustic Bass: Scott Thile

Besides seeing Nickel Creek for the first time, I also won 2nd Place in the Advanced Bluegrass Banjo Competition that day as well...so it was a very good day! :-) I also have two personal videos currently on YouTube: "Bluegrass Banjo 'Rocks' Navy Choir" -and- "Fleck's Reverie -A Navy Banjoman's Final Salute! So, check them out if you wish.

Finally, if you were a contestant at this festival (or the Temecula Music Festival in 1992) ...or, competed in the 1990 & 1991 JULIAN Banjo, Fiddle, Guitar and Mandolin Contests....Then I MAY have your performance and could get you a DVD of it. I recorded much of these events, so let me know.

  • OMG. So great! And did you see that little girl in the corner towards the end? She was funny. I know that sounds bad that I noticed it, but it was funny. Man they are incredibly talented now, and they were back then, too!

  • Yes! You must mean the little girl with the can of soda! I never noticed her until you said something. But now I see that she just LOVES whatever she's drinking...and then takes a peek in the can to see if there's anymore!!! Hah!...that is funny -thanx! :-)

  • hey who is that on mandolin?cause it doesn't look like chris thile.and does not have the same stage presence as Chris.i have seen some videos of chris thile at nine years old.and he has a better stage presence then that kid did.don't get me wrong though.that kid played amazing mandolin.but it wasn't chris thile was it?i mean, sara and sean didn't even meet chris thile until they were like 14 or 15 right?and they met at mark o'connor fiddle camp or something like that.isn't that right?

  • All I know, is that Sean is on mandolin and Chris is on guitar. Check out the ending of the previous song (2 of 3) where Scott Thile (on bass) says "Sara and Sean Watkins" and then points to his left & right. Chris (on guitar) also extends his arms out in recognition of them. Sean (on mandolin) say's "Thank you very much!" Finally, Sean is much older than Chris...thus allowing Sean to be much taller than his super-picker friends! :-)

  • anyone know where this is?

  • I always wondered if Sean felt awkward being older and taller than his band mates when they were kids. Four years is a lot when you're 15. Thanks for posting these videos--I've always wondered what they sounded like as kids, and now I know. They were pretty dang good.

  • @halfpint02 well you upstaged the band you had me rolling and giggling are you still cute and a soda junkie

  • what a trip huh?! I wish personal video cameras were used more in the early 80s. It would be awesome to find myself in someone else's video.

  • kinda looks like sara and chris could be more bro and sis than sara and sean in this :)

  • you have got to be kidding me...the girl drinking the soda is me! i showed this to my dad and he said it was me! this is crazy!

  • HA! Love it! Great seeing them as kids! I love Nickel Creek and this just tickles me!

  • This is one of my faves! I play guitar and violin with a group called the Bar G Wranglers and this is one of the main songs they do! Love the old western music. You all did this so well! 5*
