While we often mention some of Michigan's famous golf architects, there are hundreds of courses in Michigan that have been designed by the course owner. Thunder Bay Golf Course was designed by Jack Matthias in two stages, the front nine in and the back nine in His goal was to design a challenging golfing experience for the golfer at an affordable price. Matthias is particularly proud of his par five holes, which have the distance, but also challenging doglegs within the hole's construction that make them a challenge. He is also proud of the 9th hole, where he has made a short par four play more difficult than it looks. Finally, Matthias discusses the beauty of his signature hole, the 17th.
