A performance of me and some other students from Trondheim's communal music school. This was a part of another, greater show you can watch here: http://www.youtube.com/user/magasjukur

The setup is:
3 Alt/sopran recorders
1 Hurdy-gurdy
2 Violins
1 Regal (Würstfagott)
1 Portative
1 Organ type I've forgotten what is called
1 Norwegian lyre
2 Bagpipes

I'm the one playing the lyre and the swedish bagpipe to the right :)

The tunes are:
1. Anonymous Ballad of Robin Hood - Appears in Pammelia
2. Ja nuns hons pris - Ballad from Richard Lionhearts imprisonment
3. La Quinte Estampie Real/Royal - 13th century French dance from the Manuscrit du Roi
4. Pavanne la cornetta - 1530
5. Sumer is icumen in - english tune from 1260

  • that's a swedish bagpipe you're playing in the beginning right? I recognize the shape

  • @UlfLundell

    Yup, it is.

  • I've found all those bands you told me and its all nice but not enough, too much modern elements :) I know that most of the real early medieval composers were anonymous so no 1 can really name them.Anyway what i just heard on this video is probably 1 of the best .Cheers!

  • Sorry, can't recommend anything else :/ But I think Stary Olsa has some of the "earliest" music you might find.. anyways :) Good luck searching for more! Alert me if you find some groups :)

  • You could also check out "Harald Foss"!

  • this music has just enchanted me,could you recommend me any band who plays this kind of music? i'm sorry about my ignorance,am new to this :) thank you very much!

  • Thanks :) Well, norwegian band Kalenda Maya for a start. I think you would like belarusian Stary Olsa as well :) I am not familiar with many other medieval-styled bands, sorry :( You could always try Skyforger and their album 'Zobena Dziesma'.

    Good luck!

that would be really early... like sticks and stones early....

prechristian isnt hard to achive, but it verry unlikly europre ever even had a pre pagan time. as pagan means any other religion other then the main stream religions of today.

  • WTF??? I dont see that comments with tat russian and polish traditional music links!!! did you received those comments???

  • Well we serbs posses almsot all traditional slavic instruments other slavs have like our traditional guitar (tambura , very simmilar to russian balalaika) gajde ( I forgoten its name in english , its something like that instrument scots use , a sheep skin with dozen of flutes in it) that little noisy instrument , I saw it in many russian folk groups , traditional flute , maybe most popular traditional instrument in serbia , etc. But anyway I dont have any vids with that instruments. sorry.
