maybe the reason why people may find it surprising that the brain stem would be central is due to society's development of value-up is better than down or new is better than old.
but we need a 'down' in order to have an 'up' and visa versa.
imo, we can lose accurate perception when we give value.
every creature is the crown achievement of evolution. I don't really follow how one could say a part of the human brain is such an achievement, though it's clear to see why many humans might think so.
but I tend to agree consciousness goes back much further than this particular brain design of ours. I don't really get how people think they can deny it, given we only know people have this through behaviours we see in other animals and living things. Self-consciousness... a different thing.
