Montreal Independent hiphop artist Mickey Boston releases his second clip under the direction of local Montreal filmmaker, Jamie Zampini. Local Jazz musician and actor Rocko P assumes the role of the unnamed and rather distraught homeless figure who plays synechdic for hiphops uncanny demise in a nexus of perversion that has sorely plagued an art that was once a joyful manifestation from the Old School.
MBs lyrical journey back to the Good Old Days is lyrically illustrated in a verbal and poetic pentameter that renders a discourse manifested in the chronicle of socially dislocated homeless figure who once grew up loving the old school.
Director Jamie Zampini speaks of his direction of the clip in terms of attempting to bridge the old with the contemporary by means of not only exclusively using footage from 1978 and 1982 respectively but also in terms of merging the videography of a lost homeless figure who reflects back to his once vibrant youth.
My vision for this video-clip was something I had to sit down and think about. After having previously worked with MB on an earlier clip, he called me again and I really needed to sit down and hear the artist out and then listen to the iambic delivery and discursive properties of the track. From here, I had a stronger vision of exactly what I wanted in this clip and how I wanted to have it shot Jamie Zampini.
Director Zampini, after having done video-clips for both MB and Downtrodden, a local Montreal band due to release its first album by September/October 2009, notes his experience in video-clips for varying musical genres and audiences:
I knew this clip was something ambitious for MB. I had to look into archived footage yet at the same time have Paolo deliver a convincing performance. Bridging the Old with the New and the New with Old was not solely done with old school footage but also via the angles and expressions of Paolo. This video is not about MB, its about hiphop, its about Paolo, the closing shot on a freeze frame of Paolo was quintessential
Moreover, Zampini also notes his sequencing and shooting of the b-boy sequences as they were choreographed surgically:
No, I didnt want the b-boys to clash with the anonymous homeless character. I didnt want crowding in the frames and on setthe way I looked at it was that I wanted separated days for shootingI wanted distinct days for just the b-boys and distinct moments for Paolo, if you notice I have deliberately premeditated this clip in a manner where the b-boys and the homeless figure are not together, no, I just didnt want that
B-boys Majikflow, Anhel and Amine Awad were displayed separately by the director.
What I liked about all three b-boys (b-boy Amine Awad having just arrived in Montreal from France was a late last minute add-in by the way) was their distinct representations. I got what I was looking for in the very first time around, it was all business at the shootafter the takes were all done we sat back and chilled, the way it should be
MB gives his closing thoughts on the clip:
"It was my second time with Zampini, I reached out to him because of his maturity and attitude on set...we work well and exact, the way I am comfortable. There is a mutual compatibility where his direction brings out the best in everyone. His direction of Paolo was on point and Paolo himself played a convincing role. He directed and thats what he is supposed to do, the guy does his freaking jobZampini's understanding of my vision of the clip was met, I took him to Masjid Ummah in the downtown core, showed him the Gibran mural done by Hassan Massoudy's gifted calligraphy and graffed by a local Montreal graffer was all that I wanted. Having shot at St. Gabriel's Church was the exact underpinning of the homeless character's present home...things just went well on every single day we all got together to shoot...I wanna give a special shout and big ups again to Paolo for coming down, I was unable to make his album launch due to a cold so please get out there and support Paolos jazzI wanna give a shout to all the b-boys and all the support I got, thanks also to Anhel, Majikflow and Awad even though Awad was a late add"
