oaSES Online and Education Industry Association partner in a joint effort to inform the community of industry organizations of what changes could lie ahead for the Supplemental Education Services program in future legislation.
Naples, FL (oaSES Online and EIA) June 8th, 2010- To raise awareness of proposed legislative changes to Supplemental Education Services(SES), oaSES Online hosted a webinar delivered by Executive Director of the Education Industry Association, Steve Pines. The webinar was conducted for members of the tutoring community to inform them of proposed legislation that would affect SES and what community members could do to help shape the program's future.
"We knew that there would be changes made to SES in upcoming legislation and truly felt the need to inform tutoring stakeholders. We tapped the resources of EIA Executive Director Steve Pines, because of his plethora of knowledge, proximity to the subject, and strong standing held in the education industry." said Sales Manager for oaSES George Knipfer. "We really believe that the extra tutoring the students get through the SES program not only strengthens their ability to learn but also furthers our public education system as a whole."
The nearly 300 people in attendance listened to Steve Pines discuss current threats to SES, actions taken to date, upcoming Administration and Congressional activity and ultimately what the SES community can do to preserve SES. When asked about the webinar, Steve stated, "EIA participated in the webinar hosted by oaSES to give providers the facts about the challenges to SES. I view SES as an endangered species when ESEA is reauthorized by Congress, but we have a way forward that will seek to both preserve and improve SES. Providers who want to continue to provide after school tutoring must realize that the solution in Washington, DC is political. Of course, each provider has the responsibility to deliver the highest quality program possible and conduct themselves in accordance with the industry's Code of Professional Ethics."
Ultimately the message from Steve was that if the provider community remains passive during ESEA reauthorization, we could see the eventual demise of SES. He believes that SES will likely continue for the 2010-11 school year but when the nation's education law is revised, SES may become optional and/or severely underfunded. Steve would like to see more SES community involvement in the advocacy process organized by EIA, and wants SES providers to hold themselves as well as their peers accountable to a higher standard of ethics and work towards producing stronger academic results. He would like to see all interested parties (providers, parents, students, etc.) take the time to contact their local Member of Congress to share success stories as well as their opinions.
The partnership between EIA and oaSES will continue beyond the webinar. A forum for interested parties to continue the discussion has been created and is available at www.educationindustry.org or at www.oasesonline.com. The forum will be moderated by Steve as well as the oaSES staff. A podcast of the webinar as well as a PowerPoint from the presentation will also be available on both organizations websites. Contact information for both parties is available below.
