Scene 1 Questions. Part 2 (Klan vs. Townspeople, Merlin, Johnny "I am redeemed."
The growing negative impact of the Klan has become apparent. Harvey asks Merlin to pour poison in Leanoras well, but Merlin leaves town instead, running from the Klan. Someone fired a shot through Saras kitchen door, wounding Esthers father simply because he is Jewish. But most devastating to the community is Johnnys fall from grace; as a result of being caught with a schoolgirl he has been thrown out of the Klan and branded by the group.
