This James Taylor song is one of my favorites. It fits so well in a jazz idiom, I wanted to record it. Johnny Mathis's version on his album 'Me and Mrs. Jones' is my other favorite version of this tune. I played to a metronome set at 64 bpm and then added the bass afterwards.

I am using a Trillian sampled bass for this. I use a Roland Octa-Capture mic preamp with an Apex ribbon mic (modified by Mike Joly) on the bass strings and a couple of B&K omni's just outside the case. Sorry I didn't get a good overhead view of the hands. I'll work on that. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen. I hope you find something of value in it.

  • Would you be so kind as to share your recording equipment/technique with those of us who aspire to achieve such great sound?

  • @cop39out Check out the description section.

  • +1 to everyone else's comments but I will add a big bravo to whoever tuned your piano. Do you tune it yourself?

  • @vocalchords88 Thanks for noticing. I just had it tuned and the hammers resurfaced (I wear them out!). My piano tech tours w/Paul McCartney and has worked with most of the names in the classical/jazz world. I'm fortunate he lives nearby.

  • You have really captured the beautiful sound of your piano on this one Tom - wonderful recording quality! And of course the playing, as always, is outstanding.

  • @jazz2511 I was really pleased with the sound. Now I have to remember how I did it! :-) Thanks Doug. I appreciate it.

  • The audio/video is excellent. Your video editing equipment is doing some justice to the grand piano.

  • @PianoWorks3, An acoustic piano is such a personal thing. My advice to anyone who wants to buy one would be to play as many as you can before you make a decision. I've played some Yamaha uprights that were great but there's nothing like the sound and feel of a baby grand for me, but you have to find one that inspires you to play.

  • When u dont have a bassist. Trillian does the job. In some way that sound inspire u

  • Man, a truly amazing job!
