There is actually an interesting story behind this. They didn't practice this song. Mellencamp thought that Johnny wanted to leave, so that's why they didn't rehearse. Mellencamp tried singing low with Johnny and then realized Johnny was much lower. Mellencamp sang even lower, but realized that it wouldn't work, so he decided to sing higher. Afterward, Johnny told Mellencamp that "we should've rehearsed." Mellthencamp calls this the most embarrassing moment of his career.
