"I Got 5 on It" is a rap song by hip hop duo Luniz, taken from their album Operation Stackola. It features R&B singer Michael Marshall. The song has become their most famous to date, and helped make Operation Stackola their best-selling album."I got 5 on it" is a phrase meaning to pay half for a dime bag (a 10 dollar bag of weed) with another person. The lyrics in the original song clearly convey this meaning.
"Kinda broke so ya know all I gots five, I got five"
"Unless you pull out the fat, crispy five dollar bill on the real before its history"
"I got 5 on it, let's go half on a sack"
The remix to the song, which can be found on the CD single known as the "Bay Ballas Remix", featured an extensive list of artists from the Bay Area including original collaborator Michael Marshall on the chorus, Dru Down, E-40, Richie Rich, Shock G, and Spice 1. Later remixes attempt to modify the original meaning. In Dru Down's verse he states the "5" can refer to either $500 or a Mercedes-Benz 500E for the particularly wealthy, while Numskull suggests the practice can also be used to assist in paying for alcoholic beverages such as Hennessy, Seagrams or 40's.
The song samples Club Nouveau's "Why You Treat Me So Bad" (1986), Kool and the Gang's "Jungle Boogie" (1973) and Audio Two's "Top Billin'" (1987). There have also been several unofficial 'Drum 'n' Bass' remixes of this track.
In 2000, Yukmouth appeared on a "sequel" titled "G'z On It" with Mac Mall and Fed-X on Killa Tay's album Snake Eyes
