Alexander McQueen nasceu em Londres em 1969. Deixou a escola aos 16 anos para se tornar aprendiz de grandes mestres de costura, como Anderson & Shephard, Gieves & Hawkes ou Angels & Bermans. Depois de uma passagem por Milão, estudou Design de Moda no Saint Martins College of Art and Design.
A colecção que fez para o final de curso foi comprada pela também estilista Isabella Blow, que assim ajudou a lançá-lo como a nova estrela da moda britânica. Entre 1996 e 2003, ganhou por quatro vezes o prémio de estilista britânico do ano. Actualmente, tinha lojas em Nova Iorque, Londres, Los Angeles, Milão e Las Vegas
