HASAN RAJA

Hason Raja, was born in 1854 into a Zamindar family near Sunamganj, Sylhet. History suggests that much of his youth was spent in materialistic pursuits. After the death of his father Dewan Ali Raja, Hason became responsible for overseeing his family's vast property at an early age.

Despite his age, he proved to be a very successful Zamindar, not only in administering the estate but also setting up a number of local schools, religious organisations, and providing for the needy in his community. At this stage, Hason Raja started to shun his worldly pleasures and went into a soul-searching phase.

He started to question and search for answers to deeply rooted spiritual ideology. It was this mental awakening that drove him to compose philosophical works of literature that opened a whole new dimension in contemporary thinking..

"It's a matter of concern for me that currently in the name of popularising the traditional songs, the use of contemporary beat and orchestration has modified the melody and taken away the original essence of Hason Raja's work. This not only detracts the audience but also weakens the original feel of the songs. Similarly, of the several books published so far on the great poet, not all appear authentic," says Islam.
Hasan Raja died in 1922, years before his contribution to the Bengali poetry was mentioned in lectures at Oxford University by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
In this age of global media, if we want Hason Raja to be once more the topic of discussions, it is up to the current generation of artistes and patrons to respect the work of the legendary poet and properly nurture it for posterity.

William Shakespeare is often called as the national poet of England and also loved and respected by many of kings alongside general readers in England.

Hason Raja was a real king, a king of songs in native countryside of Sunamgonj in Bangladesh and a folk-poet loved by people from their heart. In the case of Hason Raja, the king of People has two significant meanings, one is the king of people's love and respect and another is the king of folk literature. Provat Chandro Gupta one Indian writer had regarded him as a king of songs. Hason Raja branded himself as an extraordinary man of a simple lifestyle, who was simple but colorful with different style of vibration, communication with a wide range of people. The way of simple approach to God and mankind was his meditation of his life
''They say my home is no good What home shall I make in the void?'' While Hason Raja was busy with making his songs and poems, Hason Raja never discriminated man and women who made many contributions to his songs, tune and lyrics in a team spirit. He found the Bengali language as one of his heart and uttered the inner sense of this world vision, world truth.

Thus the world famous poet Rabindranath Tagore searched for the truth though the songs of Hason Raja while on 19 December 1925, attending a seminar as the president of All Indian philosophical congress and again in 1930 at an invitation to 'Hebert lecture' namely 'The Religion of Man' hosted by Oxford University.
He said: ''It is a village poet of East-Bengal who in his songs preaches the Philosophical Doctrine that the universe has its reality in its relation to the person.'' Truth and lie always conflict in a person. When in a heart of a person the truth stands bright, this becomes the world truth, the world entity in a very normal way.

''I have seen the vision The vision of mine own revealing itself, Coming out from within me.'' (translated by Rabindranath Tagore) Today in society there are all around a tendency and artificial attitude leading to irresponsibilities, making lives difficult and finally to corruption. Hason Raja believed in the essence of short-living lifetime that everybody should realize.
He reflected, in every song of his writings, the realization of that truth if man can understand his short duration of his earthly life, then he or she can't spoil his or her time and it is possible in this way to be honest, preserving, sincere and hard-working. And then honesty would prevail in the society instead of dishonesty and other bad elements. Hason Raja had a deep concern that as if he had a two-threaded violin which cries for Allah as well as the pain-relief of poor people. In the mystic songs Hason searched for the philosophy of realization on short running time and the true meaning of life.

Oh merciful Kanai ! Help this poor soul cross the ocean I don't have any money to pay the fare Have mercy on me and help me get back home'' Hason Raja saw himself the true evidence of all the existence. He admitted that we travel to this world for very short period of time but we can't admit that we can see what's happening and what is vividly true to us. This is us ourselves can hold the true essence of life.
