What if Star Trek: The Motion Picture was an episode of the classic series? Here's the second segment of my fan edit.

To get things down to TV size (60 minutes) from what in the extended film version was 145 minutes obviously a lot of things had to be cut. I leveraged other fan edits for a lot of this work, and some of the changes are pretty straightforward. The overture preceding the movie with "Ilia's Theme" is gone and the start and end credits are replaced with TV length credits. The long sequences of the Cloud and the flyover of V'Ger are almost completely gone, as are a lot of reaction shots.

Some of the tougher cuts were the removal of subplots that were not integral to the central two stories of V'Ger and Kirk/Decker. Spock's time on Vulcan is gone, as is the intro of McCoy.

Some other cuts were done to change the tone. The transporter accident, which gave a staff opening for Spock and explained why Kirk had to fly to the Enterprise, but that also changed the tone to one approaching horror is gone.

I also cut down mercliessly the much loved flyover of the Enterprise. That was of course pure fan service, but the sequence does little to advance the plot apart from Kirk's look of awe and joy when he sees the ship, which I did preserve.

Two things I did keep in - the wormhole sequence which shows how Decker is dependable and loyal - and the bedside chat with Spock which I actually lengthened from the theatrical cut by using footage from the extended version.

All my edits were done with an eye to story and the TV format. I think if you keep that in mind a lot of the butchery makes sense!
