Redistricting process to be studied

Panel unanimously passed resolution

Jim Shella

INDIANAPOLIS - Who should draw the new districts for state lawmakers in 2011?

An Indiana Senate committee voted to study that issue Monday morning.

The state constitution requires the legislature to approve new districts following the 2010 Census, but Indiana Senator Mike Delph wants political considerations taken out of the process. He said lawmakers should consider input from outsiders.

"Most people take a look at the districts and see more of political rationale for the drawing of the districts as opposed to the issue of keeping communities of interest and empowering people to know who their legislators are and who their members of congress are," said Sen. Delph (R-Carmel).

The resolution to study the redistricting process passed unanimously and now goes to the floor of the Indiana Senate.
