His Holiness the Dalai Lama fled into exile in 1959 after the Chinese forcefully occupied Tibet. First he resided in the hill station of Mussoori near Dehra Dun for about a year before he was offered a new residence in McLeodganj, Dharamsala. The town is located on top of a foothill of the southern-most Himalayan mountain range, the Dhauladar. Between the spring of 2000 and the fall of 2006, I resided in McLeod to study Buddhism.
