State level team on its visit to monitor Vitamin A Supplementation programme visited one Anganwadi to see how it is happening at field level, whether micrplanning has been followed up or not. This is a random visit to one of the AWC in Mandya district in South Karnataka.

Vitamin A Supplementation Programme is considered as a key programme in reducing underfive child mortality. In Karnataka in every January and July (15th-31st) this programme is being conducted throughout the state to supplement all children from age of 1 year to 5 years with a mega dose of Vitamin A solution. Health workers with the assistance from ASHAs (NRHM) and Anganwadi workers plan for these activities at field level and cover all the children in their area on these scheduled dates.
This supplementation will help children in gaining additional body immunity against common childhood infections in general and measles, diarrhea, respiratory infections and malaria in particular apart from from its action in preventing night blindness. It also helps in promoting bone growth and maintainance of health skin and hair.
Regular two doses in a year will reduce overall mortality by 23%, measles mortality by 50%. diarrhea disease mortality by 40%.
Please dont think your child doesn't have Vitamin A deficiency. Studies have shown that in Karnataka subclinical Vitamin A deficiency is alarming i.e., 52% among children less than 5 years and also prevalence of night-blindness is 7 per 1000 children. This is above WHO cutoff to label it as a state with Vitamin A Deficiency as a public health problem.
Take your children to primary health centers/Urban health centers for Vitamin A Supplementation.
Remember: When your child completes his/her 5th birthday he/she should get 9 doses of Vitamin A !

Micronutrient Initiative (MI), a global agency for eliminating micronutrient deficiencies is supporting this programme in Karnataka both in technical and programmatic aspects since 2006 in partnership with Swamy Vivekananda Youth Movement, a NGO working for health, education and community development .
