Over the course of its 10 year lifespan (the 90's), Dandaro was a marimba band that played traditional and contemporary music of Zimbabwe in Santa Cruz, Ca. & the Bay Areas. We were birthed by Dumisani (Dumi) Maraire through a succession of intensive workshops. He came to us at a very vital & happy time, newly married and having just completed his Phd. dissertation in Ethnomusicology entitled "The Position of Music in Shona 'Mudzimu' (Ancestral Spirit) Possession" at the University of Washington. Dumi paid us no small favor in his generosity and willfulness as a teacher, and his love and respect as a friend and a brother through time. We also drew great benefit from the teaching and guidance of Hadley Louden, Brett Stewart and Erica Kundidzora Azim. We commissioned a piece from Dumi and he brought us this beautiful arrangement in the Nhema Musasa mode entitled " Ndoenda Baba." In Shona, it means, "Father, we are doing it."
