GM V2P Developed to Improve Pedestrian Safety Vehicle-to-Pedestrian Communication May Lead to Safer Roads
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 112,000 pedestrians and cyclists were injured and nearly 5,800 killed in traffic crashes in 2006. With new technology, the automotive industry hopes to help reduce those numbers.

General Motors has been developing a two-way communications technology called V2P, or vehicle to pedestrian communication, to support a driver's ability to safely operate their vehicle around pedestrians and cyclists. V2P uses two different types of technology, GPS and wireless communications to send and receive its location information to other users.

The new miniaturized technology, about the size of a cell phone, will allow pedestrians and cyclists to wear transponders that will give drivers with transponder-equipped vehicles warning when they are getting too close. In the future, GM hopes to make this technology available to pedestrians by offering it to cell phone and keyfob manufacturers.
