Upon hitting up the dealer for price quotes on my GTI's 40k mi service, i test drove both a 2012 TDI Passat as well as a new 2012 Audi A4. I feel VAG did a lot to cut back on the little mechanical details like getting rid of the piston door lifters for the trunk, and stamped hinges on the doors. In a way i'm saddened by the cut backs from the prior generation, but if it means the reliability is just as good or better, and it can lower the price, i will be able to get over it.
