  • Paint the barrels Flat black

  • Thanks, i presume you are talking about the ones I am testing outside for solar heating. Black can't be beat, I will be picking up some paint for more solar panels. In my testing I found that only part o the barrel heated up and the rest acted as a heat sync :( will have to do some insulation. Thanks for your comment.

  • Hooray for Harbor Freight! =)

Very interesting Experiment, Does the compost Mulch ever "die down" when oxygen gets used up by aerobic bacteria?

    Ben.

  • @Ben,

From what I read it goes for at least over 3 months. Another I have heard of ran for a year and a half. I hope because of the size of the large wood chips that it will run for a long time.

  • Huh, thats amazing! I guess they can breath enough somehow.

  • @harpbloke, way too hot that is what I am after! I don't want smoke, but hot water is what I am after. But what I am thinking harpbloke is get the water up very hot, then... Use solar to take it up to even hoter

  • it was a 100 foot i think and 1 inch dia. my hay/straw was just long grass cuttings, a pile about 4 by 6 foot. the main prob i had was that without a barrell like yours, the water was way to hot. the pile was warm on the outside, but inside it was extremely hot. hmm, steam engine?

i like your barrel idea, thats a great improvement and allows you to control that excess heat..

  • @harpbloke, yes with hot gas stoves or hot water heaters or hot compost piles think before you act.. So tell me how much pipe did you use? I did not consider using an old bale of hay, now that is a great idea may be cheaper than mulch..

  • i got really hot water from a pile of hay, 20 years back in australia. i didnt have electricity at that place.

WARNING in warm climates, piles of hay straw compost leaves etc get really really hot!!! rip your skin straight off.. you might say this warning in yer next vid. thanks
