Trailer for the feature documentary Frederick Douglass and the WHITE NEGRO.
Written and directed by John J Doherty. Available from
www.camelproductions.net
Frederick Douglass and the White Negro tells the story of the 19th century Barack Obama and his escape from slavery, leading to refuge in Ireland on the eve of the Great Famine. The film focuses on the powerful influence Ireland had on him as a young man. It also explores the turbulent relationship between African Americans and Irish Americans in general.
The relationship is exposed as a complex and tragic sequence of events culminating in the bloodiest riot in American history. This transatlantic story covers the race issue and is as relevant today as it was when Douglass escaped to Ireland - I can truly say, I have spent some of the happiest moments of my life since landing in this country. I seem to have undergone a transformation. I live a new life...I am met by no upturned nose and scornful lip telling me We dont allow niggers in here!
"While so much has been written about Frederick Douglass, this film is a refreshingly original look at a largely unknown part of his life - his extraordinary experience in ireland. Aside from revealing a piece of history long obscured, the film gives us a fascinating glimpse into the relations between Irish and African-Americans. This is a wonderful educational tool for students of all ages." Howard Zinn
Made with TG4, the Irish Film Board and the BAI.

  • @2Pacelipse Nope. I learned about the Irish slave trade as a young kid in school in Ireland as most Irish kids do. Its not something new.

  • @mr41ststreet Are you saying there's no such thing as Black Roman Catholics?

  • @mr41ststreet There were black catholics in the church

  • Viva thanks this is a powerful film

  • @TenderTrap86 wow! imagine Black catholics.

  • Frederick Douglass went to Ireland and saw the Irish Catholic people. They suffered greatly. He said that the Penal Law system in Ireland was equal to, if not more opressive than what black people in America dealt with. The British Penal Laws against Catholics were also in force in the American Colonies. The French Revolutionary, Montsqueiu, was quoted as saying the Penal Laws were" concieved by demons, written in blood and registered in Hell." Those laws deprived Catholics of all civil rights.

  • English people were sold to slavery in Barbados as well. Actually, more Roman Catholics were taken into slavery by the Africans than the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.. White people have forgotten history of being the slaves.

  • You know there were just as much Irish slaves in Barbados, the USA, and some European countries and some Arab countries as Africans. The Irish were almost massacred by the English in the Middle Ages by various English rulers. A lot of people in the Caribbean are mostly descendants of Irish and African slaves.

  • @camelfilm is this about white slaves?
