A restored version of this special (in "Living Color") has just been released...

It was not live.
It was in color, put on videotape and shown that way. It was among the very earliest color videotapes made.

I'm familiar with the first remake of "The Jazz Singer" in 1952 starring Danny Thomas and Peggy Lee, and the godawful 1980 version with Neil Diamond, but I never knew this TV version existed. Thanks for posting!

Yes...me too until about 5 or 6 yrs ago...then it was difiicult to find. The 1952 Danny Thomas version is rare too.

Hmm....in the other versions of this story, we're supposed to like the main character.

Exactly...I felt the same way. He was so sarcastic most of the way thru this version. Eventually he lightens up a bit and Anna Maria is suppose to fall for him. But to me, it was way too late. If you've ever seen the 1983 film "The King of Comedy" with Jerry, his character is nearly the same. But you got it right - he's not very likeable in this at all.
