This is a rarity!! Here is the opening few minutes of a live TV drama version of "The Jazz Singer". Jerry Lewis takes the lead as a nightclub singer who is torn between show business and his faith. Co-Stars Anna Maria Alberghetti. (This is a TV remake of the famous Al Jolson sound film.)
Note: Part 2 with the final ten minutes appears elswhere in my listings.

  • I'm familiar with the first remake of "The Jazz Singer" in 1952 starring Danny Thomas and Peggy Lee, and the godawful 1980 version with Neil Diamond, but I never knew this TV version existed. Thanks for posting!

  • Yes...me too until about 5 or 6 yrs ago...then it was difiicult to find. The 1952 Danny Thomas version is rare too.

  • Hmmm...not sure if I do but in the back of my head, it seems like I do. Let me search my collection & will let you know.

  • Hmm....in the other versions of this story, we're supposed to like the main character.

  • Exactly...I felt the same way. He was so sarcastic most of the way thru this version. Eventually he lightens up a bit and Anna Maria is suppose to fall for him. But to me, it was way too late. If you've ever seen the 1983 film "The King of Comedy" with Jerry, his character is nearly the same. But you got it right - he's not very likeable in this at all.

  • A restored version of this special (in "Living Color") has just been released...

  • It was not live.

It was in color, put on videotape and shown that way. It was among the very earliest color videotapes made.
