This is an updated version of my previous 'Overhead Railway' video. I have only added a couple of new shots, but I have given it a complete re-edit.

The Liverpool Overhead Railway was demolished in 1956. Using reference images found off the internet, books, and from sourcing stock footage I re-created the trams, the station and the railway as 3D models. Because the buildings where different during this time period I had to build 3D models of these also.

Most of the buildings (known as the three Graces of Liverpool) still remain, and to build these I took lots of photographs for reference. Other buildings that once stood where the Railway was located have now also been demolished, and these too where also created in 3D.

  • I continue to marvel at your work. Thank you, Steve.

For many, the thing about the LOR was that it let you see over the high walls surrounding the Dock Estate. In fact, a memorable sight in my young life came in 1953 when my train passed Gladstone Dock where the burnt-out hulk of the liner "Empress of Canada" {all of 600 ft. in length} lay on its side.

I hesitate to suggest changes to the video, Steve, but it might be enhanced by the inclusion of a short piece showing the passengers' outlook.

  • Thanks Ovie,

With regards to the Empress, I think some things are best left to the imagination. There are many interviews in the documentary where people recall their memories of the 'Empress'. I have photographs and I am looking into copyright laws regarding the use of them in the film.

There is footage out there shot by Alexander Promio of the views outside the carriage, I beleive this will be shown in the Museums upcoming exhibition.

  • I wasbowled over by this: by both the atmosphere and the detail, and by the matching of music and images.

I suppose no film-maker envisages his work finding its way to a museum, but I think that this video would make the ideal accompaniment to the Overhead-Railway display being installed in the new Liverpool Museum, { particularly as the museum building is so close to those famous structures depicted in the film}.

  • Thanks again,

I have presented this work to Richard Koeck who is closely associated with the upcoming Overhead Railway exhibition at the Mueseum. He is not interested in this work or the documentary film.
