'We're in heaven, we've got Kevin!' proclaimed the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.
This game was the start of a very special 2 years as a Newcastle United supporter in the dark days of 2nd division (old school) football.
On the back of a 9th placed position (largely thanks to the goals of Imre Varadi and the emergence of Chris Waddle) in the 1981-82 campaign, manager Arthur Cox shocked the football world by persuading Southampton's former Liverpool and Hamburg legend Kevin Keegan to drop down a league to help this sleeping giant return to Division One.
His debut against newly relegated (and FA Cup final runners up) QPR saw queues from 9am and an attendance recorded as 35,718 which those present say was never a reflection of the actual gate!
Enjoy first half highlights of this tremendous piece of Newcastle United FC History.

What can I say, what an absolute find. In the west paddock with my dad for the game, hyped up weeks before the game as our previously un glamourous club puled off a signing to rock english football. According to Ron Atkinson he was in for Keegan while at man u but KK knocked him back, what a man.
I know we blew it a few seasons later in the top flight but this signing got the ball rolling, it was a great time to be a young lad watching your home town team.
Top man sparko, cheers !
