Very Pretty Tank, Cover it very well, use an under gravel filter in the water and lower the tuibes so it works, if your feeding underwater, you must filter and change frequently, join a herp group and get the recipe for GBTF gelatin bonded turtle food (meat with less mess) remember they are toxic on the tail and paratoid glands and one is enough to kill the family dog. the california newt toxin is chemically identical to the puffer fish d

@Kopsu87 continued) so i have to promise my mom that this animal wont escape EVER.i would pay for the sliding top screen lid , thge one that locks, because i wanna make sure imean if there arent ANY objects withing 5 inches from the top should i be good, with the screen top? i mean im trying to make this easy as possible... and about food, my mom isnt all about live animals to begin with, could they eat dried crickets or worms? if they dont like pellets..thankyou for everything by the way!
i really wanna get a few, i have 3 dogs, a maltese, mix, and golden retriever puppy.
maltese and mix couldnt care less, but my puppy is a very curious animal so im really concerned with these guys escaping, id get 2, in a 10 gallon with a peice of wood in the water, sligthly above water, and only water about 3,4 inches, alittle lower than this,with a top obviously...no hanging pllants or anything and maybe a submergible ffilter...what should i worry about? good?

I don't like the idea of giving you smthing to worry about with your new hobby :) All in all, if you know the basics of keeping an aquarium, you know how to take care of newts.
But if you really want to dig into this, here are some things:
1)All newts don't like filters
2)If your newt happens to escape, it will die quite quickly without moisture, so the dog isn't your #1 problem
3)Newts like low temp, so if you live in a warm country, you might have trouble keeping the water cool

Your setup sounds good, but the tank is a bit small though. I personally don't recommend anyone to have a pair of newts in under 15gal tank, but that's just my opinion. You can have add a bit more water, depending on the personality of your newts ofcourse. What I mean by this is that some newts stay on land more (especially young newts), but more mature ones basically never leave the water.
Good luck with your newts!

Hi, what can I feed my newts? I just got 2 of them and my pet store said to feed them tadpole/frog pellets but they don't seem to like that....Thanks

@AirsoftSniper727
I mostly feed my newts frozen bloodworms. They're a good choise because newts eat bloodworms in their natural environment. You can also feed them all sorts of small bugs you find from your nearby forests, just be sure that the bugs arent toxic in any way and they're small enough for the newts to eat.
If you just got your newts, it's normal for them not to eat during the first days. My newts didn't eat for the whole 1st week when I bought them. Good luck with them!

is it true you cant use a filter with these guys? not even a little circulation pump ?

@TheMysteryman334
Their behaviour changed from calm to restless and they started spending a lot more time on the land. They also got these sort of panic spurts, where they would just run into things in the aquarium, which didn't look very nice. I decided to leave the filters out and their behaviour changed back to calm overnight.
The only advice I can give you is that you can try a filter, but if you notice change in their behaviour, I'd say it's best to leave the filter out. Good luck!
