According to a story by Peterson, he was getting a huge ego as a teen, so his dad decided to play him Art Tatum's recording of Tiger Rag. Peterson refused to believe at first that it was just Tatum, so when he finally believed it, it shattered Peterson's confidence. It took him a month to finally come back to the keyboard. Even though they became close friends, it took Peterson some time before he became comfortable playing in front of Tatum.

Oscar had a nice family. His dad offered the kids music. That was wonderful. Oscar has a really good ear and he was overbearing. I heard he monopolized the piano from his brothers and sisters. He was really blessed with a good concept and had the competition from his relatives, which was motivational. Blessed with big hands too. The physical and natural talent combined in one person to produce a very fine pianist.
