Ballad played on Tuvan Igil. This tune displays more of the igil's natural acoustic sound and natural harmonics than my usual style of playing. Come visit my channel at http://youtube.com/oddmusic to see the "igil" played in other styles, like rock, electronic, techno, etc. Thanks for stopping by!

The igil is a bowed folk instrument from the country of Tuva (near Mongolia), and is traditionally used to accompany Tuvan Throat Singing. I play some traditional style igil, because acoustically it's a wonderful sounding unique instrument that can create sounds like nothing else. My own music sounds much different than the traditional style, as I continue to find my own path with the instrument.

  • Do you realize that if you'd been around in the late 60's you would be on just about every Beatles and Stones album? I would love to hear your 'Whowhatchamacallit' (tuvan igil?) 2 stringy thingy with a Hang Drum and Shakuhachi. That would be awesomness to the n'th degree. You do beautifull work, Thank YOU. Please, keep it up! Oh, and BTW, I just bought an AdrenaLinn because of you.

  • @valvenator Thanks so much, Valvenator ! I was around in the late 60s, but I was just a little kid :) Well, I do play the Hang Drum and take Shakuhachi lessons, so the 3 instruments may come together at some point after all... though it'll be awhile before my Shakuhachi playing reaches a better skill level... and here I thought the igil was tough to learn!

  • is your wife feeling ok is she out of hospital?

  • @deathlord236 thanks for asking, she wasn't in the hospital, she has a chronic pain disease, but she's happy and will be around for a long long time :)

  • youre very good at that. i have two questions: where can i get one, and how did you make that noise at 2:27?

  • @Brysonmdulack they are hard to find, you might be able to find out where the Tuvan bands "Chirgilchin" or "Huun Huur Tu" are touring and get one from them. The sound at 2:27 is just be dragging the bow very close to the bridge, you hear it here and there, but much shorter than the long one at 2:27. Thanks for the comment! -- John

  • Wow, I'm struck by how much that felt more like a conversation then a song. Theirs just so much depth to both the song and the instrument, amazing. Somehow it left me feeling like I was looking in on a something deeply personal, thank you for sharing.

  • you're really wicked at playing the igil
