I do not repent.
(Priya Assal Gheysari)
I dedicate this piece to the Goddess that lives inside of all
the Iranian women who have stood for the evolution of our
culture towards a higher state of consciousness, and to
those who are at the forefront of the battle for freedom and justice in Iran today.
The poem that Im reading in Farsi and later English is
by Forough Farrokhzad.
Forough was an Iranian female poet and film director who passed away in 1967 at the young age of 32. She was for her time a controversial modernist whose boldness and
authenticity of speech made her an icon in the Persian culture. I seldom come across an Iranian individual whom still today, does not pause and smile at the sound of her name.
The poem I chose for this piece is called: I do not repent.
Indeed Forough lived her life with her head up high and her feet firmly grounded in her truth.
For that I honor her.
The sound of Ney (Persian flute) is by AHURA, a Persian fusion band that has been producing beautiful Sufi music for the past two decades.
Finally, the Goddess is immersed in a projection of poppies
because the poppy fields that cover the sides of the roads from Tehran to the mountains up north bring back a sense of sweet nostalgia to many Iranians and carry a part of our
cultures heart and soul.
