@jckfmsincty - I just finished reading her biography by Jill Watts, who said that although Selznick staff had reportedly written her a speech, she left it at the table and instead gave her own, composed with the help of her long-time publicist, Ruby Berkley Goodwin. Watts also wrote that McDaniel was the first African-American to attend the Academy Awards ceremony, and that she received a huge round of applause upon entering the Coconut Grove ballroom at the Ambassador Hotel.

Wonderful actress, and the movie would have not have won the Academy Award without her performance.

Hattie McDaniel had two stipulations put into her contract for Gone With The Wind: one, that she at no time say anything like "OOOHH, lawdy!" or words to that effect, and the other, that in no scene in which she appeared was she or any other Black character to refer to themselves as Niggers, although that would have been historically accurate. Anyone who thinks she just "cooned" it up in that picture is seriously mistaken.
