found this parasite in my fresh cod fillet from costco. the Phocanema decipiens. they are a common form of parasites in cod, and although the manufacturer does everything reasonable to remove them before it gets to the consumer, some are encountered by the consumer nonetheless. as long as the fish is fully cooked, the parasite poses no threat to humans.

  • i was a butcher/fishmonger and we used to spend an hour every day picking worms out of cod i dnt think ive ever seen a piece without them but if cook properly they will die. but it true ask any fishmonger at ur local supermarket. enjoy eating cod people:)

  • @moikaka69 damn. You beat me to it...

  • call of duty worm

  • I just found 1 of those worms in my flounder tonight. After doing some reading, they are very common and everyuone says to just pick them out. They also say as long as the fish is cooked to 160 degrees the worm is harmless if eaten. I understand all that, but it still doesn't make me feel good when I see it. It turned my stomach.

  • Hold any fresh fish....especially cod, close to and in front of a strong light source. Look for the faint sign of a circular shape. Usually about 1/4 inch across when coiled up. Take a knife and cut that area away. Look at the surface for any worm on the surface or partially imbedded. Cut or wash it away. Virtually ALL cod fish has worms. It doesn't matter where you buy it.. If you've been buying, cooking, eating cod and you've never seen them, you just didn't know they were there.

  • I also bought cod at Costco and found this worm. I have a friend who was fisherman and here is his answer about it:

Cod almost always has worms, but if they're treated properly they're not visible. When I fished, if I was going to eat a cod, I'd kill it and not clean it for a day. The guts stay warmer, and the worms go into there so they're removed when the fish is dressed. I think the heat from cooking it might kill it, but I personally wouldn't take the chance.

  • Wow, I had no idea there was such a thing. I went and bought 2 pounds at the Fresh Market fresh from the fish deli. And while my hubby was standing there waiting on the others frying he glanced down and saw a light red stream on the very last fillet and touched it with a fork in his hand and it started squiggling. And he's 62 years old and has only liked cod fish, and never seen one before in his life nor knew they got them! To say the least he's returning all the fish cooked and not, tomorrow.

  • i know its not nice but shit happens,i work packing fish ,cod worms very common.I still eat fish but not cod,at the end of the day do you ever REALLY know what your eating. What the eye don't see,the heart can't grieve.Bon Appetie

  • so glad i looked this up i just found the very same in a fresh piece of cod i bought from morrisons in wood green north london.

  • I found one of these in a package of cod today. Just one, searched the fish thoroughly. Mom would have tossed the whole fish if seafood wasn't so ungodly expencive where we live; the effinng coast. All we can fish here is salmon. I hate salmon.
