This is going to sound like a really dumb question, but if you were to tense up while holding them could they actually feel it and would that tense them up as well?

yes the tarantula will sense you tensing up...and it will probably cause it to tense up also.

hello, my gf and I just bought ourselves tarantulas today on a whim. She bought a pink toe and i bought a salmon pink bird eater. The guy in the store said they are super easy to keep but im a bit nervous about the temperature. Temps are in the mid to upper 60's in our house during the winter, and how much of a problem is hte humidity? The tanks have a paper towel in them that is used to provide humidity by keeping it moist. How often do i need to soak that? Should I mist them often?

I would mist the tank no less than once every 2 days. Also if your temp in your house is in the 60's then you should also get a heat lamp. Both of those species are tropical, so you want to try to keep it warm and moist. Get a humidity gauge and a thermometer. BTW, you will want to clean the tank about once a week to avoid mold.

Tarantulas make such awesome pets. I had one that I got when I was eight years old, and she used to chill on me (shoulder, neck, head, shirt...wherever) while I watched cartoons. I'd have to rinse the hairs off after, but totally worth it. She died last year at 22 years old.
