Amidst my 18 units of Piano, Acting 1&2, Chinese 1 and Korean 1, last
semester at SMC ...
Five Korean Level 1 classmates and myself worked are tails off to
produce this film, "Wig Over Manhood" (a play on the title of a famous Japanese Drama, "Boys Over Flowers") as our final project for our foreign language class and it is my most proud accomplishment of the Spring 2011 semester. (Even over appearing in the Chinese Newspaper for Southern Cali.)
Bear in mind the the following when watching ...
A textbook for a 101 language class only teaches you 20 or so verbs.
Try to have a conversation using only with them!
Our script however was not translated from English into Korean but was painstakingly written in Korean by Denis and I over lots of NORMS' coffee. And Scene 3A was entirely written by Zin. Not to mention 3 pre-production private library room meetings where conceptualization
and full story-boarding took place with all the textbook's Verbs, Nouns and Adjectives previously typed so we never started coming up with ideas we wouldn't know how to say.
Our very excellent teacher, Ms. Jungjin Kim, asked my group of Chinese Xiǎoxù, Guatemalan Frank, Burmese Zin, French Denis, Bangladeshi Sadaf
and an American, myself, if we will be able to successfully complete
our script without any NATIVE Korean speakers in our group because in her experience, no Korean 101 class ever had a group with absolutely no Koreans in it (Ridiculous, right?) ... I laughed, and told her ''We'll be just fine.'' She's, now, showing it to her current classes as a template for what she hopes her new students will emulate because (in her words) it's the best job she had ever seen.
Final Presentation Requirements:
1. At least, 20 grammar points from our textbook
2. Something culturally significant to Korea. (We went with Korean
Style Blind Dating).
3. Reach 10 minutes in length.
4. Present completed script to Professor 2 weeks before final class and turn in DVD on final class day to present.
M.V.P. Award definitely goes to our Burmese member, Zin Oo, for his
editing work despite his awful grammar with subtitling. I think we can all agree, he worked the hardest.
This is soooo aweeeesome!! I hope my Japanese Elem1 Class is as fun as this!! Did you study Korean prior to taking this class? I've been self-studying Japanese for 1 1/2.

@crownedinbeauty Nope. We were all beginners as well. Unfortunately, I was the only one of my group members to continue to 2nd semester Korean ... Eventually, I had to stop going as well and frankly, it was not as fun with out them ... My advice to you is: "you only get out what you put in so work hard." I would be happy to help you with your Japanese, if you like. I am fluent. Are you at SMC?
