I propose that anyone who shares this belief be granted the option of opting out of any hate crimes sentencing in any case regarding them.

His story is so self-serving to further GOProud's conservative narrative. I doubt even believe a shred of his story. I think he just needed an excuse to get on the media.

And his claim that hate crime laws don't work doesn't hold water. They're meant to be punitive for the commission of heinous crimes done to a protected class solely because of their protected status. While I would it would discourage other people, clearly it's main purpose is not prevention of crime.

@homerth1555 Don't even get me started on It Gets Better. All of a sudden there was a bunch of gay teenagers killing themselves? Bullying has always been around, and gay teenagers have always suffered. The difference is that liberals take advantage of the deaths and blame Republicans for killing the teenagers. Name specific discriminatory laws against homosexuals that liberals alone without conservative help have abolished. Republicans don't usually cater to a group of people only to get votes.
