Here's a controller-in-hand demo of SSRPG. I also own the Neo Geo CD version and wanted to make these videos on the NGCD system, but am unable to because my NGCD system is on its last leg.

As you can see, the battle mode is definitely influenced by Final Fantasy in many ways. It has the familiar turn gauges that have been around since Final Fantasy V.

However, SNK implemented two gameplay modes to choose from to make a comfortable playing experience for two demographics: The hardcore fighting gamer, and the role player.

First there's the Fighting Mode. Basically the Final Fantasy 3/6 Sabin Figaro Blitz system has resurfaced. You execute your moves through D-Pad inputs as if you played the SS fighters.

For the hardcore RPG players that are not too keen on the fundamentals of fighting games, there's the Role Playing mode in which their skills are executed through clicking words.

  • Yeah if the screen says Error 0002 after loading, you're screwed.

  • Everything is wrong. Worse yet, one of the hinges on the back of the CD lid is broken and I can take it on and off. It's pretty much ghetto. A friend gave it to me a few years ago and it was working fine at the time.

  • They kind of HAVE competition. It's called "Shin Megami Tensei."

  • Was this ever released in the states?

  • Thank God! I would imagine playing it via Nebula would make it a superior experience than on a NGCD. I can't stand those loading times.

It's also a shame that SNK did not give the CDZ a 2x or 4x speed CD-ROM drive, what a difference even a 2x drive would've made.

  • Once again, the 16-bit NEO-GEO CD version is the best. Better than the 32-bit Saturn or PS1 versions.

  • I'd like to see a remake of this game. Squenix could use some competition^_^.

  • Killer load times.

  • EE- BGM YAWA!

  • thanks for letting charlot get her revenge on homeskillet..that pleased me ^__^

  • Bushidou Retsuden could take 30-40 seconds to load each fight. In spite of that, it's still the best version of the game. Actually, the Nebula emulator can run the NGCD version pretty much flawlessly, and with drastically-reduced load times.

  • It often makes wonder Toneman if they should've just stuck with cartidages. By the way, where the loading times on the NGCD really THAT bad?
