This video complements "Conversations in Class, New Edition", an English conversation textbook aimed at Japanese low-intermediate university students. More specifically, it covers the first "Sounding Natural unit" of the textbook.

Those of you who are familiar with the first edition of Conversations in Class will have noticed two major changes in the Sounding Natural units (formerly entitled "Golden Rules"):
- We included more activities, so that students would be able to learn about the rules more interactively.
- We took out the Japanese from the printed text and put it into audio tracks, so that teachers would be able to use these units as a group activity, in order to better control the flow of the lesson (we noticed that students have a tendency to glance over written texts and then be distracted when the class should focus as a group).

The video blends together the visual elements of the Sounding Natural 1 unit and the Japanese soundtracks.

A few ways you could use this video

(1) You could simply show it to your class.
This can be done in a number of ways: using a CALL classroom; connecting a laptop or iPod to a projector and the sound system of a standard classroom; etc.

(2) You could have students listen to the audio part of the video, while using the visual part yourself to know when to pause.
This can be done for example by connecting your iPod or a laptop to the sound system of a classroom, without connecting it to a projector: students hear the video, and you watch it on your screen.

(3) If you are able to use a CALL classroom, you could let students go through the unit in pairs, rather as a group. You can then use this particular class time to do a first long round of conversation tests, or... take it easy, and go around the class at your leisure, helping students who need it.

(4) Another option is to have students go over the Sounding Natural 1 unit outside of class time, as homework. You can simply give them the URL of the video, and they can do it at home or on a computer at school.

(5) If your Japanese is good enough so that you can cover this lesson yourself in Japanese, you will not need the audio tracks. The same applies in the case your students' level is good enough that they can understand the content in English. Teachers in this situation might use the video to prepare their class.
