em... WRC imprezas didn't have the intercooler right under the scoop for a long time (if they ever did), I/C in front, behind the bumper gets much more air, they wouldn't do with the I/C on top. These cars work!
P.S. WRC cars don't usually go sideways! Going sideways scrubs your speed down, although it often happens, that cornering on loose surfaces is fastest done through powersliding.

In my opinion, it has less to do with aerodynamics, because the WRC cars are usually going sideways. It will help, but lowering the center of gravity is more important to these guys.

I think it has more to do with trying to keep the lower center of gravity for the car. But I'm glad they are keeping the scoop in the market STI, that's what makes the STI's, the snarling scoop that the driver in the front of you sees when he looks in the rearview mirror, saying 'get out of my way' >:o, (although its not as menacing looking as my 07 :D).

The scoop made it look mean, now it looks like toyota, kia, mazda!!!

But on the WRX STI the front hood scoop is functional, the intercool is top mounted on them.

actually the scoop has been removed because its no longer functional = front mount intercooler

it has the scoop and the spoiler but the spoiler is much much smaller and the hood scoop is integrated into the hood so it is bigger but less noticable. also the redesigned the '08 road car first so that the body looks as simillar to the wrc as the 07 road did to the 07 wrc car.

good thing about this rally was that petter and phil were able to make it to 2nd by their new impreza. bad thing is that at the sametime chris and stephane retired in the end... its sad that new impreza lost it's bonnet hood that sedan impreza had and yellow marks they used to have...
