  • Hi Kees, I should tell you that I am not a Ney player, but a fan. Years ago I was listening to some Iranian Music Masters' Interview that I heard them mention this subject.

As far as I know, the problem is solved by correcting the way you place the Ney and blow in it.

Like whistling it can be fixed by practicing. I don't think you can find a fixed formula for that, as my teeth and your teeth are different.

Listen to Kasayee's play and try to play as soft as he plays.

  • Thanks very much for the enjoyable advice. I have some more ney videos on youtube and would be grateful if you could comment on those too. Thanks again!

  • Kees plays the Ney well. But there has always been a problem with Ney's sound, and that problem is the HISS. This is the unwanted sound of air witch Saba has made it almost disappear some 5 decades ago. Nowadays even students of music can play Ney without HISS.

I hope that Kees can make it disappear too ;)

  • Well that's definitely the weirdest feedback I ever got. Maybe if I play at the horizon of a black hole the sound will come out and the HISS will fall in the black hole and disappear in the singularity? Or will it come out in the form of Hawking radiation?

  • my god!!! what is this beauty??? there is too much beauty that hurts...

  • This man is a fine ney virtuoso. The sound of his breath is part of the timbre of the instrument itself. I think I would miss it if it wasn't there. It is as if the instrument were alive and breathing. For me, and probably for many others as well, the sound of the air does not interfere with the music at all. On the contrary, it adds to it! One way to reduce the "hiss", is to place the microphone further down the instrument away from the mouth of the player. Wonderful video. Thanks for posting.
