When I first moved to Wilmette in 1988 we lived on 11th Street, just north of Central, in downtown Wilmette.

I'd often walk the block west of our home with my son Jordan and my daughter Valerie.

Earlier today Jordan and I took a walk down Central Street, reminiscing about the block and noting how little it's changed. We close with Jordan's take on what it was like to be a young kid growing up in Wilmette.

  • Thanks Joe and Jordan... we live in Los Angeles and will be moving to Wilmette in a few weeks. This was a PERFECT way to experience a portion of downtown. LOVE the family atmosphere and secretly hope I'll still be able to surf a bit on Lake Michigan. I've been told over by the old shopping center near the lake, just north of the park, there are some good waves :)

  • @virtualoha think you'll be disappointed in the surfing in Chicago.

I've never surfed, but have watched quite a bit. Was making 20 or more trips to southern Cal for years (the LA Times is a client).

My daughter went to school at UCSB and i watched some great surfing just south of Santa Barbara. Also got to see the Wedge in Newport Beach when the waves seemed to be surging to 20 feet. Body surfers only were out.

You'll like Wilmette. It's a great place to live

  • I'm in Southern cal. now but I'm from the Chicago area and even lived in Wilmette briefly, so I feel confident telling anyone who looks at this post that Wilmette is a GREAT place to live. Everyone is courteous and the lifestyle while relaxed offers tons of entertainment, art, AMAZING FOOD, and cultural experiences.

  • camera lens choice was a bit nauseating combined with the movement

  • Your son did a great job in front of the camera. Maybe he should try to get into media.
