During the weekends (Thursday and Friday in Iran), the citys many parks are a colorful and crowded check-board of picnic blankets. Iranians have elevated the picnic to an art form. In the summer picnickers arrive as the day cools, around 5pm and stay until dark, 9 or 10pm. Sandwiches and paper plates have no place at an Iranian picnic. Hot tea is served into glass mugs; real plates are piled high with hot food, fresh fruit and vegetables, pastries.
