You should've repaired the windows instead of ignoring them, you can repair them without moving the blockades. Also, you should've ran out of the cottage when they overwhelmed you, it's usually easy to run into the zombies and push them away as you run for the exit. There's a trick where you can fire the shotgun super fast, mash both mouse buttons simultaneously and rapidly and most of the reload delay will be ignored :)
