One very windy day in Michigan, my flag pole came crashing down in my yard. I saved the pole sections and later had an idea to use them for a home made camera jib. I bought 2 used german equatorial telescope mounts and tripods on eBay. I disassembled the mounts for the worm gears, axles and tube cuff. One gear is used for tilt control and I eventually plan to use the 2nd gear for pan control. The motor controller was purchased here: http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/motor/k166.htm. Other parts I had laying around the house or bought at garage sale or hardware store. Although the motor is noisy, it's possible to do dutch rolls by mounting the camera sideways on the platform. The tube can also be fixed at 45 degrees in the cuff to accept our Merlin Steadicam on the front-end axle (motorless/quiet mode). We offer this jib/camera/operator combo for hire to shoot real estate videos (home walkthrus, etc.) or any shots requiring smooth, sweeping camera motion or unusual angles. http://palmeridigital.com

  • I spent about $60 for the used equatorial mount & tripod (eBay). The PWM controller board was ordered on-line (pre-assembled & tested) for about $58. The 12V drill was bought used at a yard sale for $30 I think. Maybe another $25 at local hardware store for ring clamps, drive train, screws, wing nuts, bushings, etc. Remaining parts I already had laying around my home.

  • The video has a Setup section and Operation section. To jump ahead to the Operation section click in the progress bar to the 6 minute mark.

  • How much did the overall material cost you? So far your jib seems to be the most stable and most reasonable.
