I think that Elisha Cook, in retrospect, is rightly admired for 2 reasons.
1. He really was a fine actor.
2. His ability to play the "sap" or the "loser" triggers something in our brains...in our heart of hearts we know we cannot live up to the "leading man", and so we identify with the characters Cook portrays. In his position the "leading ladies" would play us for fools too, and the leading men like Bogart would treat us with disdain.
