for a d3 you use a d6. 1-2 is a 1, 3-4 is a 2, and 5-6 is a 3. You can't use d4-1 because that means that you have a greater chance of rolling a 1 than you do a 2 or a 3 (because you would do 1 damage 50% of the time) - you are weighting your own dice against you.
