Short fragment of the famous Dutch Swing College Band at the time Peter Schilperoort was not in the band.
Jan Morks - clarinet
Dim Kesber - clarinet
Wybe Buma - trumpet
Wim Kolstee - trombone
Arie Ligthart - banjo
Joop Schrier - leader, piano
Martien Beenen - drums
Bob van Oven - bass

This is one of the earliest filmed pieces of the DSC. The band started in 1945 and will have a big 65 years party at mai 8. 2010 in The Hague. All trad jazz fans come to the Dr. Anton Philipszaal!

This film show the band in a very fiery drive, no solos, but anyway, what an energy this band could produce.
The Netherlands should be proud of having such a band, playing this lovely music on a professional level since 1945.
The band started out as a swing band, playing a lot of Ellington music.
When Peter Schilperoort became leader at first they played many King Oliver pieces, even with two trumpets.
The late 1950's Schilperoort left temperoraly, piano player Joop Schrier was leader then.
Schilperoort returned in 1960, when the band became full professional.
When he retired Bob Kaper was voted the new leader, he still leads the band, now back again to 8 members, like on the short video.

    Vriendelijke groeten,

    Bert B

  • They are a great band today as well. Have you ever had the opportunity to run across them live since you live nearer to them than Texas?

  • Yes, I have seen them quite often. In fact the Dixieland Crackerjacks will play at their 65 years aniversary as well. We are proud to be invited. I played with 4 of the members that are now in the band, and also with the very first drummer, who started in 1945. He is still alive but doesn't play anymore.

  • This band is surpreme. Just hear the pace and musical perfection with which they perform this tune.

  • Wybe Buma always, without fail, made a great contribution to the line-up.

  • Don't forget to listen "I found a new baby" issued in 1954. This number was broadcasted last Friday on radio 5 Nostalgy. For me the most creative piece of swinging classic/jazz ever.
