Fine visual representation = faster (new) user adaptation :)
MS did a huge job on gathering large amounts of info from win7 beta users just to make the interface snappier.
Now I know it's hard to achieve this kind of project for a FOSS community, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be done with collaborative means.
The secret is listening to many users (easily managed with forms) and having both eyes on detail.
