Johnsons Crossroads Café, located at the intersection of TN Hwy 25 and TN Hwy 76 (3200 Highway 25, Cottontown, TN 37048, phone 615.323.1566).
Johnson's Crossroads Café was created from an old brick-o block building built in 1948 and caters to the farm community of Cottontown. The retired folks in the area play cards and have a place to just "hang." There is plenty of humor associated with their special "liars" table, set aside for the mayor and other local politicians. Health Inspections scores have never been below 95. Meat and vegetables are served daily as well as grill items and freshly patted out burgers and Western Omelet's second to none.
Adonda recording artist Howard Lips, Tom Pick and Harrison Tyner enjoyed a marvelous breakfast and fellowship at Johnsons Crossroads Café. Tom and Harrison ordered Western Omelet and both agree that it was one of the best omelets they had eaten. Howard ordered two eggs, gravy, biscuits, country ham and grits, and on the way back to Nashville he talked about how good it was. In fact, they were all so impressed with everything there -- the folks enjoying fellowship, the food, the staff, the owner -- that at the suggestion of Harrison, Tom and Howard wrote a song about the experience. The song on this slideshow is the title song from the Adonda album titled, "Down South."
Johnsons Crossroads Café is a great place to eat and enjoy fellowship; a perfect down home southern eatery. If you like to dine at a no frills place with exceptionally good food, this is the place for you.
Co-produced by legendary 8-time Grammy winner Tom Pick and Harrison Tyner, the liner notes for Howard's DOWN SOUTH album contain the following: "It's refreshing to hear an artist bring compassion to his music like Howard Lips. He sings with the same compassion as he uses to deliver the Word of God. As his Lay leader and friend I can speak for many of us who get to enjoy this talent each week" (Dale Carnahan, Emergency Management Director, Perry County, Mississippi). "I am proud to know Howard, not only as a Musician, but as our Methodist Minister. He also works with our School through His music and spiritual leadership and the kids really love Brother Lips. I'm honored to be a part of this new CD" (Albert Garner, Mayor, New Augusta, Mississippi). "This album is special to me, you feel like you are there with Howard as he sings his memories and fantasies" (Tom Pick). "Howard's style is unique and his abilities are second to none. Adonda is proud of Howard Lips -- a multi-talented songwriting and singing troubadour" (Harrison Tyner).
A native of Mississippi and double major graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, Howard Lips performs as a single act on stage, playing guitar, dobro, banjo, mandolin, and harmonica. A multi-instrumentalist performer, Lips is well-received in a variety of venues, such as colleges and universities, fairs, concert halls, pubs, festivals, private parties and church events. The music of Howard Lips is rooted in the traditional story-telling style of music performed by Jimmy Rogers, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and Neil Diamond. He draws from the deep well of Elvis Presley's Gospel and Rock & Roll, Robert Johnson's Delta Blues, and Country Legends Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Sr. and Porter Wagoner. The Mississippi singer/songwriter performs music spanning 50 years of traditional Country, Pop, Rock & Roll, and Country Gospel.
Peter Bordonali played on Howard's "Down South" album. Bordonali is a Nashville Music Industry Recording veteran who has recorded with such Country Stars as George Jones, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood, George Strait, Shania Twain, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett, and Pop stars such as Joe Cocker, BB King, Marie Osmond, Ann Murray, Olivia Newton John, Bill Medley, Barbara Streisand, Nancy Sinatra, and Wayne Newton. With his legendary guitar, mandolin and bass playing work on this album, he now adds Howard Lips to his list of Country Stars.
