Rylance seems to have garnered lavishly fulsom praise that the previous comic performers did not merely because his is enshrined in theatreland and has been "franked" with the luvvies' stamp. This doesn't make the performance any better or worse but the plaudits seem hysterical to connoisseurs of comedy who have seen similar performances in the sitcom or standup idiom.
