Houston Community College is grabbing national attention as the recipient of a $3.5 million federal energy grant. HCCs Chancellor Dr. Mary S. Spangler spelled out details of the multi-million dollar grant at a VIP Reception for the HCC Chancellors Symposium on Energy Wednesday evening.

•HCC is the only Texas institution of higher education selected to receive $3.5 million by the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

•The funding will help establish a network of educational, industry and state partners to ensure the availability and effectiveness of solar installation training throughout the region.

•The project will also provide professional development opportunities for educators at institutions that wish to start or improve training and education programs in solar installation.

•The HCC grant ($3,566,058) is the largest amount awarded out of the nine regions selected.

The VIP Reception was well-attended by whos who in Houstons energy and engineering industries, including Chevron Energy CEO Jim Davis and Texas Representative Bill Callegari (R). The evening also included a videotaped welcome message from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.
The reception is in appreciation of the teamwork and cooperation of the sponsors and HCCs staff who worked to make the Chancellors Symposium on Energy an event that local high school and HCC students will remember. The Symposium on Energy is Friday, October 16 at the Norris Conference Center-CityCentre Houston, 803 Town & Country Blvd. Now in its second year, the Houston Community College Chancellors Symposium Series brings together high school and HCC students for a full day of information about educational opportunities and career paths. And this years event focuses on Houstons dynamic energy industry. Chevron Energy Solutions is the Presenting Sponsor of Fridays Energy Symposium.
