CV gate control via acoustic drum triggers into reason... Basically here's the way it works: Acoustic drum trigger (piezo) send signal to alesis d4 trigger module, trigger module then converts the audio signal to midi data and sends that to presonus firepod, computer receives midi data, and that is routed to reason. Within reason what happens is this: midi note hits a channel of redrum which has no audio output, and is then output via it's own CV gate into a combinator rack containing the synth that I desire that drum to trigger a sound from. Beyond just the synth in the combinator rack I've placed a matrix step sequencer which is also controlled via the CV gate of the individual redrum channel. I put the sequencer in there so that there is a basic "if/then" scenario for it to react to: hit snare once = "A1," hit snare again = "D1"... so on and so forth. Otherwise every time I hit my snare the same note would be triggered and that's just boring. Currently I only have two triggers running, one on my kick playing a distorted rhodes vst, and one on my snare playing a violin ensemble.

  • Yes. Cubasis actually does see the individual drum sets from the D4, however the pads, while showing that the D4 head receives a signal, doesn't send the signal to Cubase when striking a drum pad. Here are the settings I am using. By pushing the "Midi" button on the front of the D4 unit it gives 5 midi screens. (1) DRUMSET ROOT - Note:000 C-2, (2) Channel: Omni, Thru : On, (3) Prog Change: On, Controllers: On, (4) PROGRAM TABLE 001 = 01 (5) SYSEX BACKUP: System (All).

  • @terrificlegs Hmm... not sure man. Wish I could help. These things are hard to do without being in person with the equipment.

  • How did you get your D4 to midi out. I am using Cubasis SX with Reason 3.0 and cannot get the module to send out singnal. I have used the midi buttion and attempted all the settings according to the manual. Can you help me? Thanks Dino

  • @terrificlegs does your midi input system "talk" to reason with other hardware devices connected? It could be some setting in the d4, or it could be your set up... gotta eliminate the possible problems.

  • Very nice work! I've also looked at your other videos, all very cool..

I have been trying to figure out a way to do this for a little while - what I can't figure out is how to use a step sequencer based on triggers the way you've done it.

How to you tell the sequencer to move to the next note only once the previous one has been played (ie the A1>D1 logic you mention in your description)?
