Tim Laursen presents his robot drummers at World Maker Faire New York 2011. The colorfully decorated MIDI-controlled solenoid drummers are activated by a small button panel, and Tim wears his owl drummer backpack to dance to the music.

    Normally in a design like this, the MIDI is used to control relay switches, which connect a much stronger power supply to the motors/solenoids when activated. The relays isolate the weak 5V or so logic system from the 12V+ motor system.

    The motors are controled by the signal midi but how do you change this signal to electricity for active the motors?
